Meet the dried flower bouquets that started it all, the creations that are the heart of my online store and most-loved by you – my bestselling Everlasting Wildflower Bouquets!
WHAT IS A WILDFLOWER?
Well, that is a tricky question to answer. A true wildflower is one that is found in the wild, brought to bloom without any human intervention. These flowers tend to be on the smaller side and are often annuals that self-seed readily. Sometimes they can be native and sometimes they can be non-native. Some can only be found in the wild and some can be cultivated in the home garden. Flowers that are not considered a wildflower are usually larger flowers that have been bread or hybridized to produce a more desirable cut flower - think designer roses and dahlias.
THE EVERLASTING WILDFLOWER BOUQUET
And so, my wildflower bouquets are a celebration of the smaller blooms, the dainty ones, the glimmer of colour that you can see swaying in a grassy field. I like to use a lot of different ingredients in my bouquets, usually ten, as I think that it is this variety that makes them so magical and intriguing.
I cultivate both native and non-native wildflowers in my garden, being mindful not to let weedy non-natives escape. I am also a passionate forager, but this must also be done with great care. I never collect native wildflowers from the wild – we want them to continue to seed and reproduce! I like to collect things like ferns and grasses and vines – or a small amount of something where there is an overabundance. I find that these ingredients are fundamental to a wildflower bouquet – as it mimics the natural environment where wildflowers are usually found.
FOUR SEASON-INSPIRED STYLES
My wildflower creations are offered in four unique styles that are inspired by the seasons. You will come across these styles in my other offerings as well – such as crowns, wreaths, and wearables. While each is a reflection of a particular season, all are available year round. The inspiration for these colourways goes back to 2020, when I started growing my own strawflowers to dry for AMBLE & TWINE.
Warm - Earthy tones of ochre, terracotta and apricot / feels like autumn
I used the variety ‘salmon rose’ as the basis for my warm style – these flower blooms in apricot shades that are autumnal and earthy, and so the style formed around that idea. Colours may include salmon, clay, brown and beige and often include more seed pods that other styles. This is a popular option for rustic, country-style homes and for autumn weddings.
Blush - Sweet pinks with soft peach and blushing tones / feels like spring
The strawflower variety ‘silvery rose’ was the inspiration for my blush colourway – pink, but soft, like the sweetness of a spring day. Pink has a feeling of newness, and my garden is always bursting with pops of pink in the earliest days of spring and this style reflects that. Blush is my most popular style for gifting to girls and daughters, and for decorating nurseries.
Neutral - White with yellow and a gentle touch of colour / feels like winter
The third strawflower that I focused on growing was the ‘vintage white’ variety. This gorgeous colour always reminds me antique pieces of glazed stoneware. There are many white and yellow flowers in my collection and so I mixed them together to create the ‘neutral’ style. This reminds me of winter, when there is less colour in our gardens.
Bright - Colourful mix of yellow, mauve, pink and orange / feels like summer
It wasn’t until much later that this ‘bright’ colourway developed. My flower collection grew so much over the years that I had so many blooms to work with – I wanted to create something colourful to celebrate that. This joyful style is most popular for gifting to loved ones, family members, and mums. It is a wonderful reminder that naturally dried flowers can be full of colour without chemical bleaches and artificial dyes.
