Lupinus polyphyllus 'Mixed'
This gorgeous flower is a cottage garden favourite, producing tall spires that are covered in little pea shaped blooms. This seed mix contains an array of colours, including purple, pink, and white. Plant them towards the back of your beds, or en masse for a spectacular display, and enjoy cutting them regularly to bring indoors.
As a short lived perennial, have a little bit of patience when sowing lupin. I prefer to start these in trays, in autumn, and let them creep along slowly through winter, to be planted out in the garden in late winter or early spring. Once settled, they can live for 2-5 years, so plant them in an area that will not be disturbed, and space them 30-50cm apart.
Lupin does not require overly rich soil, and they can even do a little bit of work for you; lupin is a member of the legume family and can actually improve soils by naturally fixing nitrogen into the soil.
Choose a sunny location to grow them, in an area that receives at least 6 hours of direct light each day and enjoy these striking, colourful blooms all summer long.
